Halloween 100 years ago

These exciting little ads from the Colorado Evening Telegraph date from October 1920.  I think it's neat to see what foods were in style for Halloween 100 years ago.  Doughnuts, apples, ice cream and mints appear to be popular.  Meals or parties were common as a celebration as opposed to trick or treating.
Dern's appears to be a specialty grocery.  My pal Beth found this postcard on Ebay depicting the inside of the store.  Yum!

They had a great eye for the ads.

Hmm - does that witch look naked to you?  Let's take a closer look. Yep I would say so except for the hat and shoes.

I love the graphic in this ad.  Could they have squeezed anymore images in here?  I wish I could check out their window.
Interesting isn't it, that a home furnishing company would also sell apples for Halloween.  Delta is a county in far western Colorado.  What do you think the skooky is?

Merchant Trick or Treat

Yesterday, I kidnapped a child so I could attend merchant trick or treat.  Luckily, she was already dressed like a cupcake.  We perused up and down Manitou Ave. scoring candy from the store owners and checking out the other costumes and merchandise. It was a blast.

You can see I am keeping a tight hold so she cannot escape
As luck would have it, the child was incredibly  enthusiastic about the kidnapping.  She was not the least bit frightened at the haunted parlor but enjoyed playing with eyeballs, bats and spiders. I held her for ransom until her parents paid up at dinner.  Then to my amazement her unstoppable energy kept her knocking on doors until about 8:30.  Pretty incredible for a 4 year old.

The Legend

I have always been the trusty provider in the past but this year I am going for legend status.  Hope the 12 kids I get at the door appreciate this!

1926

Judging from the businesses hawking Halloween wares, it was a well enjoyed holiday in the 1920's.  The foods of choice were donuts, apple cider, apples and pumpkin pie.  Candy was fashionable too.  Parties, rather than trick or treating, were popular.  Here are some fun ads around the Colorado Springs area which will help plan your perfect soiree'.  I love the graphics on these.

When things sag or slow up at my party, I usually suggest more alcohol.  Alas, prohibition kept that option at bay.

Viands, now that's a word you don't hear much.  It is defined as articles or dishes of food of a delicate or choice nature.  I am gonna use that on this years Halloween invite.

The bogie book was the "go to" Halloween party guide.  Here it is from 1921, the year of the ad above.

Hmmm - all about Christmas with that fine Halloween graphic.  Even back in the 1920's, Christmas invaded Halloween!

Pumpkin pie seemed to be associated with Halloween in the 1920's than it is today.

Spooky Scary Package

I spent the last 10 days in Minneapolis with family.  I originally scheduled the trip to see two bands at the little Varsity Theater on the University of Minnesota campus.  The bands were amazing and I am so glad I made the effort to go see them.  The first was New Politics, a great indie bands with 2 members who hail from Denmark.  This was such a great high energy show and Dave, the front man can really dance.  By the end of the show, he was pulling off  his shirt and I swore I was at a Chippendales show - he was ripped.  This old lady was lusting after his fine young body.  Anyhow, they were thoroughly entertaining and I heartily recommend their music and live performance.

The other band I saw was The Bleachers - a solo project of Jack Antonoff of the indie band Fun.   I couldn't believe my luck when again it was an incredible, high energy show with an amazingly charismatic front man.  Great music, great band - go see them!  They were worth every penny of the ticket price.
So all this babbling about music explains why I was not home when my package from the spooky, scary give away arrived from Abby at the blog of the same name http://spooky-scary.blogspot.com/.  But it was waiting for me and upon opening, was full of fun Halloween goodies.  She packaged it so cute to with many adorable Halloween papers.  Here is a photo of how it looked when it arrived:
Look at all the fun stuff in there - Halloween pez, pumpkins cups, Sugar Babies, Mike and Ikes, A trick or treat candle, serving dishes, and lots more underneath.
Games, zombies, monsters, an ice cube tray, stickers, a serving dish - it goes on and on.  So I pledge to Abby to play with all this stuff and blog about it.  It will do my old soul some good to have some young fun!  Plus I love these adorable papers she line the box with:

So from the bottom of my heart Thank you Abby and Aquaman for your generous giveaway.  If you have a chance, pop over to http://spooky-scary.blogspot.com/ and swap a howdy with Abby.
