Mystery Solved

Lately, I have been seeing and hearing a lot about Joy Division, an obscure British band from the late 1970's.  I liked Joy Division when I was in high school, unlike those around me who were enamored with bands like Journey.  But I have been pretty baffled lately with the sudden frequency of references to this band - like hearing them in my local grocery store and seeing a fellow in a restaurant in Santa Fe with this t shirt on.

Why does everyone suddenly love Joy Division?  Why not the Stranglers?  or Fad Gadget? or The Boomtown Rats? or Wire? or The Buzzcocks? or Magazine?  I could go on and on about the great music from the late 1970's/early 1980's.

But then his Lordship and I watched Stranger Things and it all became crystal clear.

So here is to Ian Curtis and the commercial success he has achieved 37 years after he took his own life.

  1. I was never cool enough to listen to Joy Division, then or now.

    1. We were total music nerds - searching record stores for bootlegs and anything avant garde. Not cool and popular - much like Jonathan in Strangers Things although I looked like Nancy and dated plenty of popular losers like Steve. That is, until I met his Lordship at 18. He was the answer to all my anglophile cool music dreams.

  2. I like Joy Division they were a fantastic band who were cut short with the untimely sucide of Iain Curtis. For the last few years, I've noticed people wearing Joy Division T shirts.Which made think alot of people liked the band rather then just wearing tshirts.I watched Stranger Things last year it had a awesome sound track. Perphaps we're in 80s remergance for music.

    1. Let's hope so - think of all those awesome bands that could finally get a little recognition from a larger audience. Unfortunately, some of them are dead.

  3. The shirt also makes an appearance in the musical Be More Chill in fact that is what Ella wore for Halloween. I did not know it was also part of Stranger things!
