Emma's Wake

The Manitou Coffin Race are today.  If you are unfamiliar with this event you can get more information here in my past posts.  If you are new to my blog, Emma was a young lady who came to Manitou in search of a cure for her tuberculosis.  She died and requested that her coffin be buried on top of Red Mountain. Years later in a heavy rain, that coffin came racing down the mountain.  We celebrate today with the coffin races.  Yes we are a warped little community.

Since this event takes place in my backyard (figuratively),  I blog about it every year. Coffin races 2017 are no exception - His Lordship and I  have many fine folks visiting and I will attend with a Twisted Sisters and the offspring of a Twisted Sister.

Last night, we attended the pre-party called Emma's Wake.  It is a local production at the fabulous Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs. The story of Emma Crawford and her connection to Manitou springs is told through small skits as we toured the castle. The history of mourning in the Victorian era is explained as well as Emma's connection to Red Mountain.    It was quite amateur as some of the actors forgot their lines! But it was all in good fun.  It ended with a yummy homemade meal.
