Catacombs

I have been to the Catacombs in Paris.  It is an eerie experience.  When descending the dark, damp stairwell under Montparnasse, the first thing I noticed was the smell.  A musty, close oder that seems to seep into every crevice.  Then you start to see them - bones.....bones everywhere.  Skulls piled higher than ones head.  Femurs stacked into fascinating geometric shapes. Walls made from the long dead. Established in 1786, they contain the remains of countless Parisians who were moved when the city was reconstructed.
Proof that we were there

  1. I've always wanted to visit the catacombs, but at the same time the idea of breathing in the dust of people's remains kind of wigs me out. And I'm a germaphobe, I'd have to go in completely covered lol.

  2. We missed this one on our Paris visit. We got as far as the entrance and learned it had been vandalized the night before and was closed for the week. Not sure we could do it anymore. We enjoyed the visit to Sedlec Ossuary but it's not as closed in underground as the Paris Catacombs. My wife can't do small spaces so good anymore. Still, we'd give it a shot if we ever went back. Good photos!

    1. Sorry to hear you missed it, Yes it is a small space and probably not the best thing for anyone who is claustrophobic. It is bizarre though - like nothing I've ever seen and it goes on room after room.
